Duluth, Ga. – June 26, 2013 ― For the fifth consecutive year, Merial worked with the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ACVO), to sponsor the ACVO/Merial National Service Dog Eye Exam during the month of May. The event featured ACVO board-certified veterinary ophthalmologists offering free ocular exam screenings to all qualified Service Dogs. Over the course of the month of May, this year’s event proved successful in signing up a total of 7,700 dogs.

One of the highlights of this year’s event included a special screening at the Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio to identify and help prevent eye problems in local Service Dogs from the Transportation Security Administration and the Department of Defense. Over the course of the week-long event, 52 dogs were examined. “Beyond serving as loyal companions, dogs perform a number of other tasks including bomb detection, search and rescue operations and guiding the visually impaired – thus it is an honor to give back to these Service Dogs as they give so much to us,” said Tony Tortorici, Director of Trade Marketing for Merial. “We are proud this event was able to help these dogs do their jobs by helping them maintain their health.”

Annually, approximately 250 ACVO diplomates donate their services to provide eye examinations to qualified Service dogs across the United States and Canada.
